Sharrow is home to a very culturally diverse community, with
many people who have settled from different countries
for a variety of reasons. We were
interested in creating a visual representation of the journeys that some people and
their families have made.

Below are some of the stories collected at 127 Club Garden Road:
My Dad was 14 when we came to Sheffield from Pakistan – my Grandfather came as a tradesman. My Dad went back and got married to my Mother in Pakistan. My dad came back by himself as my Mum didn’t have a visa, she came a year later in 1976. I was born in nether Edge Hospital in 1977.

I was born in Liverpool and came to Sheffield as a student. I have tried to leave on a few occasions, back to live in Liverpool, a year in Manchester and a year and a half
traveling but I always seemed to return and I now have a family who were born here.

I came here on 25th September 2004 from Lybia to be with my sister.

My parents were born in Pakistan. I was born in Sheffield.

I was born in Pakistan. I was nine months old when I came in Britain and since then I have stayed in
Sheffield all my life and have six brothers and six sisters all married and moved in their lives. I live in mount Street.
I was born in the Lake District, journeyed to Sharrow via Dorset, Bangor and Cambridge. Ended up here November 2004 to be with the love of my life!

It’s amazing I’m here at all. My Father was a refugee from Poland. My Mother was English and from Sheffield. It took a war to bring them together – a miracle out of madness.
I came in 1979 to S10 with my two sons to Wilkinson Street. I worked in Tempered Spring Engineering Company. I went back to Pakistan and then back to S7 – Wostenholm Road. My wife and me have four daughters and three sons, one in Sheffield, one in Bradford, one in Luton and more than six Grandchildren. Now I am at Grange Crescent.

I first came to Sheffield in 1971. I left in 1974 only to return eleven years later. I have always felt Sheffield to be my real home.
My Mum was born in Pakistan.
I came to Sheffield in 1978 to do my nurse training and have stayed here ever since apart from two years when I tried to escape. I love it here and my children are from Sheffield.

I came to Sheffield from Bangladesh in 1991. I came with my Mother and Father and brother.

I was born in Zimbabwe. My brother was born in South Africa. We moved here in 2002 and came to Sheffield in 2004.
I moved to Sheffield from Lybia in 2003 and now live on Hobart Street. I moved with my husband and children.

I was born in Rotherham then I moved to Gainsborough and then I came to Sheffield in 1993, I think, I lived on Woodseats Rd, got divorced and moved to Washington Rd about ten years ago.

In September 1987, I arrived at Sheffield, got off the train and felt at home. My parents will come to live here when they retire. My daughter was born here. I rarely visit Germany now.
I was born in Karachi in 1942, moved to Essex in 1949, Suffolk from 1950, London to study in 1964, Dorset and industry in 1969, various countries Sheffield in 1984 to study MSC, sickness benefit from 1985. Lansdowne flats 1992 to present.
I was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), a short spell in Leeds, then LA, USA, carried across US to Massachusetts w/ family and friends – Boston then Amherst to Leeds then boarding school (Quaker) in Cumbria, expelled, then High School, then to court for truancy but escaped
this by going to Amherst age 16 to live with friends. To High school then Leeds and see family couldn’t get back? College for ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels then to do fine art at Leeds. Then to
Wakefield then USA then London and MA. Then Lincolnshire to a cottage on the Humber estuary then married at 5 and half months pregnant. Husband and I both had sisters in Sharrow which brought us here for support as husband has parkinsons disease (early onset). Our baby is now 2yrs and 5 months and the world is a miracle through his eyes.
I moved to London in 1954 from County Tipperary, and then to Sheffield in 1956 I came here to work as a builder/joiner and worked on quite a few of the flats here in Sheffield – most of them are now gone. I was married here and my children were born here.
I came to the UK in 1963 to Bradford. I was in the British army in 1945, then India and Pakistan divided and I went to Pakistan.
I was born in 1979. I have worked in Sharrow for three years, I have a new born son.
I was born in Bradford in 1977 and moved to Sheffield in 1998. I have one child.
I came to Sheffield in 1990 when I was 8 months pregnant with my third child. We moved to Steade Rd our children went to Sharrow infant and juniors. I ran, for a time Mt Pleasant playground and the after school club at the adventure playground.
I was born in Berkshire. I moved to Jersey as a baby in 1980, I lived there until 1999 when I moved to Wakefield to go to University. I went to Thaiwan for a year in 2003 and
traveled around South east Asia. I now live in Holmfirth.
I was born in Africa, my parents and grand parents are from there, from Kenya. I went to Pakistan and when I was a baby my father came here. When I was 16 years old came here. I’ve been here 25yrs. I was in Manchester first and now here. My sister is in Manchester.
I came to Sheffield in 2000 as a student and ended up in Sharrow in 2005 as a landscaper! I was attracted to Sheffield as a city and also far enough away from Surrey! Sharrow has become a bit special to me, it’s ‘real’ and ‘street’, with the ‘hippie village’, artistic, cultural theme – I love it. X
I moved to Sheffield in April 2003. I originally come from France and I move to England (Leeds) in 1997 to spend a year to do something different and change my mind after my father and Grandma died, I decided to stay. I met my ‘husband-to-be’ in April 2002 and we got married at the lovely wedding cake in April 2004, and I enjoy living here.
