Encounters’ Shop in Dewsbury

Adult Learning Week

Encounters teamed up with Kirklees Neighbourhood Learning Network to co-create a personal exhibition of learning by local adults for Adult Learning Week 15th - 22nd May 2010.

Fifty shop visitors and students from local colleges took part in creating their own personal Learning Again exhibit, including objects which reflected what the experience meant to them. We awarded Certificates of Learning to exhibition participants.

During Adult Learning Week from 15th May, Encounters invited shop visitors to take part in activities in the shop while tutors offering course taster sessions inside and outside the shop.

Our question on the wall-sized blackboard that week “What’s the most useful thing you’ve ever learnt?” drew responses including:

  • Nobody is better than anyone else, let’s learn from each other
  • Volunteering makes you feel good
  • If you ask, you’re a fool for 5 minutes. If you don’t ask, you’re a fool for life!
  • Patience
  • BSL (British Sign Language)
  • How to make children’s clothes
  • How to cook
  • You’re never too old to learn
